I can’t find a good job!

Having trouble finding a good job? Don't worry; it's out there! But you might not be looking in the right places- the hiding places! The hidden job market isn't a very complicated thing. Employers are not trying to hide a whole bunch of jobs from you. The hidden job market simply refers to all the jobs out there that are never advertised in the newspapers or posted at employment centers or places like Job Zone d’emploi or Centre de service à l’emploi, etc.

Research has confirmed that between 80 and 90 percent of job openings in our area are part of the "hidden job" market. Why don't employers post these positions? Well some companies are too busy to place an ad and then sift through the piles of resumes that will result from it. They need someone who's willing and able to work right away. Or, a company might be in a growth or adjustment phase and the management isn't entirely sure of who and what it needs-until you walk in the door and convince them it's you they need!

Although tapping into the hidden job market demands some serious research and work by you it's the most promising way to get a job. The hidden job market is actually great news for you if you play your cards right. The best news about the hidden job market is that fewer people are going for the same job because so few people know about it.

When a job is posted in a newspaper, there's a high response rate because everyone who opens the newspaper can see it and everyone who's the least bit anxious about a job search is going to put in an application. What happens is so many people end up applying for jobs that they may not be qualified for or even really want it.

Others may be just putting in an application because they may lose their employment insurance or their welfare or other support program funds or even because spouse or parent are pushing.  The thinking is, better send in my resume and get them off my back.

But what is sweet about the hidden job market is that you choose where you want to work. You use your own network of people who like you to help you find the job you want. Once you've started talking to your teachers, your parents, your parents' friends, your community connections, you get the idea- you're well on your way to getting hired.

When you schmooze, you never lose. It's not what you know; it's who you know. Well, what you know is important but first you've got to get your foot in the door. And the key to getting a shot at that job you want is to talk to the people you know. Calling about two or three people a day for a week or two and letting them know what kind of work you're looking for is a great way to get that new and better job. Eventually you'll find somebody who is looking for someone and that someone happens to be you.

Be positive and pro-active, use your contacts, don’t get discouraged and sooner or later, that great job will come to you. In meantime, you may want to continue to upgrade your education and skills. Employers love to hire people who continue to find ways of improving skills and competencies.

It is very much a world of who you know so don’t just sit on your hands and whine. Get out there and get to know people and talk to them so that the word gets around that you are a great worker who is well qualified and will do a great job for the right employer, given the opportunity.
